Vanessa Bryant celebrated what would have been her daughter Gigi’s 15th birthday by launching the clothing collection “Mambacita” in her name.
In an Instagram post on Gigi’s birthday, May 1, Vanessa explained the process behind the clothing collection. She wrote, “When I thought about how best to celebrate Gianna’s birthday with so many who loved her, I knew it had to be a combination of sharing her bright and fun personality with her sense of purpose and passion that would help make a difference in this world. Gianna was kind, energetic, a leader, and had so much MAMBACITA swag. When I thought about who would help me capture her laid back yet girly-edge, I thought of female-owned @DANNIJO. Two fun-loving sisters running a successful clothing line, they jumped on the opportunity to celebrate Gigi’s birthday with us, completely pro-bono.”
The collaboration resulted in a limited-edition Mambacita x Dannijo tie-dye sweat set capsule collection. All of the details have a special meaning:
The purple hoodie is “an ode to Gigi’s forever status as a Laker’s princess.”
The black and white hoodie represents “the colors she wore on her Mamba uniform.”
The red font “symbolizes Gigi’s red bow. From K-8th grade, Gigi always loved to wear a red bow in her school pictures.”
The Mambacita logo has wings with a star because Vanessa always called her “My Star” and “Wings.”
The right arm has #PlayGigisWay inscribed on it “since she gave her all every time she played.”
The #2 in a heart emblem “symbolizes the number Gianna wore wrapped in love to represent her love for basketball and everyone she met.”
100% of the proceeds will go to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, which is dedicated to creating a positive impact for underserved athletes and young women in sports. Vanessa said, “Gigi was especially motivated to change the way everyone viewed women in sports, and it’s fitting that this capsule represents her values.”
Gigi and her father Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in January 2020. Gigi was 13-years-old.
