Leaked photos from the new live-action Powerpuff Girls series have triggered a wave of criticism over the costumes.
Photos of the three leads from the pilot — Chloe Bennet in pink as Blossom, Dove Cameron in blue as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault in green as Buttercup — give a first look at the all grown-up Powerpuff Girls.
Based on the ‘90s cartoon that followed three superhero sisters (who were accidentally created by their dad Professor Utonium when he added “Chemical X” to “sugar, spice, and everything nice” in his lab), the new alternate reality show will depict them as "disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting."
The premise of the show sounds promising, but the costumes have already failed excited fans. And even for an impartial observer, the costumes are underwhelming for female superheroes.
When we have better-looking and higher quality costumes for characters like Wonder Woman and Black Widow, at least the styling team for the Powerpuff Girls could have tried to raise the bar? The characters are now young adults, and especially if they resent their crime-fighting childhood, they’re not going to be running around in adult versions of their little girl dresses.
