Musician Grimes and tech mogul Elon Musk welcomed their first child into the world in 2020. Their son's name made us all look twice: X Æ A-XII.
This time around, though, Grimes and Musk decided to keep the birth of their daughter entirely private, whose name is Exa Dark Sideræl. In the cover story for Vanity Fair, Grimes opened up about why she chose surrogacy for this pregnancy and what her relationship with Musk looks like these days.
Grimes Chose Surrogacy Because She Had Complications With Her First Pregnancy
Grimes wasn't very open about the struggles she had in her first pregnancy, but it wasn't exactly easy. She shared some details about what she experienced while she was carrying her son — she wasn't even able to walk during the last few weeks of her pregnancy.
“He was pressing on my nerves, so I kept collapsing,” she said. “I took a few steps and collapsed. It was kind of scary, because you don’t want to fall a lot when you’re eight months pregnant. So I would just crawl to the bathroom and crawl back or whatever.”
She even felt like she was dying at one point. “Like, I hemorrhaged," she shared. "It was scary.”
But she and Musk have always wanted to have multiple children — "We've always wanted at least three or four" — so they decided to go with a surrogate for their second pregnancy to avoid any serious complications. Their daughter, whose nickname is Y, was born in December 2021.
Grimes and Elon Musk Aren't Exactly "Together" Anymore
Grimes relocated to Austin, TX around the time her daughter was born, presumably to be closer to Musk. But we heard last year that the two had split up. Musk told Time that they were "probably semi-separated."
She confirms that they're not exactly "together" anymore. “There’s no real word for it,” she explained. “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid. We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.”
But Grimes confirms that they're happy together and they're still planning for more kids together.
