Best and Worst Oscar Looks past decade

With the 92nd Academy Awards coming up, audiences worldwide are waiting to see what styles celebrities will bring to the red carpet. Every year unexpected twists and turns take place in the fashion world.

Here is a look back on the Oscar’s best and worst styles of the last decade!

The Good

1. Charlize Theron's Lavender Silk Gown (2010)

If we could bottle all of Charlize Theron’s elegance and poise, I’m sure it would outsell the Dior perfume she endorses. The Academy Award-winning actress showcased this sheer gown in 2010, at the peak of her acting career. With its unique dual-toned lavender pieces paired with a beautifully coiffed updo, this look launched Charlize into A-list stardom.

2. Angelina Jolie’s Famous One Leg Pose (2012)

Angelina Jolie

The Mr. and Mrs. Smith actress created an uproar in her asymmetrical Atelier Versace dress. The famous leg-pop created a fan-following, with numerous memes and comedic routines following suit. The striking pose even warranted its own Twitter account.

3. Gweneth Paltrow’s Elegant Caped Dress (2012)

Gwyneth Paltrow

The statuesque star stunned audiences in this classic white Tom Ford gown, complete with a chic floor-length cape. She chose this piece from Ford’s “top secret” Fall 2012 collection and consequently became one of Hollywood’s most fashion-forward figures.

4. Halle Berry’s Versace Striped Suit and Spunky Pixie (2013)

Halle Berry

The Catwoman star made headway with this eye-catching sequin dress, outlining her feminine curves with boxy shoulders and dazzling stripes. She donned black tear-shaped earrings which perfectly complimented her tousled pixie.

5. Lupita Nyong’o’s Blue Prada Bedazzler (2014)

Twelve Years a Slave Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o became a household name with her ethereal sky blue Prada gown, paired with a silver headband and subtle make-up. Nyong’o chose this gown because it reminded her of her home country Nairobi.

The...Unusual Looks

1. J.Lo’s Ruffled Armani Mess (2010)

Maybe Georgio had an off day when he designed this contraption...It looks like J.Lo had to pose awkwardly to make room for the extra fabric that was haphazardly sewn onto the gown. One thing is for sure, just because it’s designer doesn’t mean it’s functional!

2. Lady Gaga’s Red Gloves (2015)

We all know that Lady Gaga spares no shock when it comes to her choice of costumes and outfits for her performances, so why should the red carpet be any different? The red gloves paired with the sparkling wedding-esque gown came as no surprise to fashion critics. Maybe she wanted to get a headstart on some cleaning after the show?

3. St. Vincent’s Bold Black Body Suit (2018)

St. Vincent, a.k.a Annie Clark, attended the 2018 Academy Awards ceremony for her nomination for “Best Original Song.” While we can appreciate the edgy and contemporary look paired with a bright red lip, the bulging black shoulder piece looked awkward for real life fashion.

4. Rachel Weisz’s Mismatched Rubber Ensemble (2019)

Rachel Weisz

The Best Supporting Actress nominee for her role in The Favourite made a unique outfit choice to sport at the 91st Academy Awards. While we love her dark hair and flowered headband, the rubber cropped top and embellished skirt made viewers look twice - and not for the right reasons.

5. Kacey Musgraves’ Pink Tuille Gown (2019)

Country singer and Grammy award-winning sweetheart Kacey Musgraves went all out with her flowy and bright pink Giambattista Valli gown - and reviews were mixed. Some critics adored the bold layers, silver bow, and snug-fitting bodice, while for others it was reminiscent of a ballerina gone overboard. In either case, we applaud Kacey for entertainment!

Closing Thoughts

Some celebrities aim to wow the audience with glamour, while others choose unconventional styles. Either way, we wait in eager anticipation to see what each star will wear this year - will they choose elegance or flare?
